Upper Hutt Housing trust was formed as a Christian response to the level of homelessness in our community. We have been working with the homeless, and people in transition with housing needs, and have made extraordinary progress to that end.
The vision of the Upper Hutt Housing Trust is that all of our people have suitable and sustainable housing.
The Upper Hutt Housing Trust was formed in August 2016 as the trustees could see the shortage of emergency and transitional housing in Upper Hutt and the desperate situation this created for homeless people.
Our aims are to:
a) To empower individuals and families to source suitable, affordable, sustainable shelter
b) To promote pathways to ensure people living in insecure accommodation progress into secure accommodation
c) To advocate on behalf of people needing support to find safe, secure accommodation
d) To ensure individuals and families at risk of homelessness have support to lessen the risk
e) To provide interim, transitional housing where need is determined
Most days we are hearing from a new family who are struggling to pay rent or cope with financial commitments. We have rented a number of houses in Upper Hutt and with the landlords permission have sublet them to families while we work with them to find a permanent solution to their problems. At the same time we have established a contract with MSD who refer clients to us as part of their Transitional Housing programme.
While many have an urgent and immediate need for transitional housing in Upper Hutt, this in an ongoing need that will continue until more social and low cost housing can be built or made available.
